Greater Hartford Arts Council Calendar
Exhibition curated by Laura Engel, Professor, Duquesne University
Pearls figure prominently in pictures of celebrated and imagined figures across the eighteenth century. Adorning royalty, celebrities, servants, and in fashion plates, the mysterious, opaque, and gleaming white accessory aligns with the mutable, seductive, and threatening emergence of new forms of identity. Worn as jewelry, as embellishments to the body and dress, or embedded in the settings of precious objects – pearls accessorize, highlight, colonize, and perform. As one of the most sought-after commodities of the early modern colonial enterprise, a precious jewel tied to bondage and violence, pearls have a baroque and complex history. Drawing from materials in the Lewis Walpole Library this exhibition will explore the “paradox of pearls” by considering how the varied and often contradictory meanings of this jewel appear in period images and the ways in which practices from the past connect us to the powerful presence of pearls today.
Exhibition: "The Paradox of Pearls: Accessorizing Identities in the Eighteenth Century"
At Silent Book Club, there's no assigned reading. All readers are welcome it's BYOBook (or browse the Barney Library shelves!). Settle in for an hour of silent, sustained reading. At the end of the hour, attendees can socialize—or not!

Under the direction of music director Carolyn Kuan, the HSO performs Beethoven’s third symphony (the “Eroica”) and there’s nothing quite like it. In fact, the fourth movement is one of the pieces that drew Maestro Kuan to conducting—the ending chorale is so simply gorgeous… “It feels like a glimpse of heaven, or of hope… all that is good in the world. Sharing this music is what makes being a conductor so special.”
Guest artist Julien Labro joins the HSO for a special collaboration undertaking a Four Seasons project for the bandoneon. The Vivaldi version audiences may know, and they may know the Piazzolla for the violin, but it is believed to have been originally written for the bandoneon. For our concert, we will alternate “seasons” between Vivaldi and Piazzola, featuring Julien’s own arrangements written especially for the HSO.

Music and art is forbidden in Afghanistan, leaving ancient traditions to live on in hiding or exile. The program will open with the mesmerizing sound of centuries-old Afghan raga music, performed on traditional instruments. Following will be the premiere of a ballet written by Sadie Harrison and choreographed by Elisa Scroth, based on artworks by Afghan women smuggled out of the country and on display this evening. The ballet will be performed by Ekklesia Contemporary Ballet and Cuatro Puntos Ensemble, and the artworks are made possible through the courageous work of Northern Ireland’s Beyond Skin.
