This one-of-a-kind display will be showcased at Berlin-Peck Memorial Library from November 2 through November 30, 2024. A “Trash Art” workshop will be held at the library on Thursday, November 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.*
The exhibition is a celebration of diversity, featuring nineteen portraits that highlight individuals who broke political barriers during the 2020 election and the subsequent 2021 federal appointments. This moving collection showcases diverse barrier breakers from various backgrounds, including African American, Asian American, gay, lesbian, Indigenous, Jewish, Latinx, Muslim, and transgender individuals, ensuring that many people can find a story that resonates with them.
Among those featured in the show is Kim Janey, the first woman and first African American to serve as acting mayor of Boston. Each portrait celebrates trailblazers who have advanced the representation of disparaged groups within the traditionally white and cisgender male-dominated world of elected and appointed officials.
In a powerful artistic statement, Sarah Schneiderman creates each portrait using non-recyclable trash as her medium. “First, Not Last” is not just an exhibition, it's a call to action. It reminds viewers of the progress achieved thus far and highlights the need for further efforts toward inclusive representation in America’s government. This show is a beacon of inspiration, urging viewers to continue moving toward a more diverse reflection of our nation’s citizens.

Exhibition curated by Laura Engel, Professor, Duquesne University
Pearls figure prominently in pictures of celebrated and imagined figures across the eighteenth century. Adorning royalty, celebrities, servants, and in fashion plates, the mysterious, opaque, and gleaming white accessory aligns with the mutable, seductive, and threatening emergence of new forms of identity. Worn as jewelry, as embellishments to the body and dress, or embedded in the settings of precious objects – pearls accessorize, highlight, colonize, and perform. As one of the most sought-after commodities of the early modern colonial enterprise, a precious jewel tied to bondage and violence, pearls have a baroque and complex history. Drawing from materials in the Lewis Walpole Library this exhibition will explore the “paradox of pearls” by considering how the varied and often contradictory meanings of this jewel appear in period images and the ways in which practices from the past connect us to the powerful presence of pearls today.

Join us for a journey back in time at our Foodways: Hearth Cooking: Colonial Thanksgiving event and experience the flavors of a traditional colonial Thanksgiving feast.

During this in-person event, you will have the chance to learn from Dennis Picard, a longtime historic interpreter who specializes in colonial cooking techniques. He will guide you through preparing classic Thanksgiving dishes using traditional methods and ingredients.
Join us and immerse yourself in a colonial Thanksgiving's sights, sounds, and aromas. This event is perfect for history buffs, food enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to explore the rich culinary heritage of our nation.
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving like never before. Reserve your spot now and get ready for a truly unforgettable experience!
Food in colonial times was much different compared to what we eat today. Religious beliefs, traditions, geography, growing season, harvest, and cooking methods all played a role in what was available and how much was eaten, with each region developing its unique dietary habits. "Living history" expert Dennis Picard will share anecdotes about New England colonial life while demonstrating how to start a fire and cook in the hearth or on an open campfire.

Mary Elizabeth Basile Chopas is the granddaughter of Italian immigrants who settled in Farmington, CT in the 1930s. Her presentation will discuss the experiences of Italians living in the United States during World War II, with special focus on the Italian residents of Farmington through the lens of her family. When the United States entered World War II, Italian nationals living in this country were declared enemy aliens and faced with legal restrictions. Several thousand aliens and a few U.S. citizens were arrested and underwent flawed hearings, and hundreds were interned. Less restrictive measures included curfews and raids on homes. In telling the stories of former enemy aliens as they attempted to resume their lives after the war, Chopas demonstrates the lasting social and cultural effects of government policies on the Italian American community. She is the author of Searching for Subversives: The Story of Italian Internment in Wartime America (UNC Press, 2017).

Prepare to be captivated by Sarah Schneiderman’s unique exhibition, “First, Not Last: Portraits Celebrating Individuals Who Broke Political Barriers in 2020”.

First, Not Last: Portraits Celebrating Individuals Who Broke Political Barriers in 2020
Exhibition curated by Laura Engel, Professor, Duquesne University

Prepare to be captivated by Sarah Schneiderman’s unique exhibition, “First, Not Last: Portraits Celebrating Individuals Who Broke Political Barriers in 2020”.

THE ULTIMATE PINK FLOYD TRIBUTE
Whether through projections, lasers, lights, or other effects, Floydian Trip creates a spectacular experience authentic to Floyd’s famous touring years in the 1970s and 1980s. A painstaking recreation of the classic Pink Floyd live experience. The band has poured over thousands of hours of official, unofficial, and bootleg audio and video of Pink Floyd between 1973 and 1981 in order to create the most authentic live Pink Floyd experience you can witness.
A Floydian Trip experience aims to recreate some of the spectacular and moving live performances that Pink Floyd became known for in the 1970s and 1980s — sometimes known as the “Roger Waters Years.”
It’s as if you’re hearing ‘Floyd’ live on stage during the Dark Side of the Moon Tour, Wish You Were Here Tour, In the Flesh (Pink Floyd) Tour, or The Wall Tour.
Floydian Trip: A Tribute to Pink Floyd
Lucy Kaplansky draws from personal experiences for her lyrical subject matter, focusing on the often complex matters of the heart. Universal themes of loss, longing and loneliness, as well as love, joy, friendship and hope, are all propelled musically by roots-based instruments including acoustic guitars, mandolin, piano, percussion, and the occasional electric guitar. What Kaplansky seeks to capture and share in her songs are emotional truths, as she puts it, “When I listen to music, or even read something, it has to ring true to me in some deep way. I’m striving for that in my writing.”
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30.

// ABOUT STANLEY-WHITMAN HOUSE //
In 1935, Stanley-Whitman House was established as Farmington's first museum. It is a nationally recognized historic house museum and living history center that teaches through the collection, preservation, research, and dynamic interpretation of the history and culture of early Farmington, Connecticut. Programs, events, classes, and exhibits encourage visitors of all ages to immerse themselves in history by doing, acting, questioning, and engaging in colonial life and the ideas that formed the foundation of that culture.
Located in the historic village of Farmington, the museum facility centers on a circa 1720 National Historic Landmark house furnished with period antiques to reflect the everyday activities of Colonial life in Connecticut. Surrounding the house are period-raised bed gardens, an apple orchard, and heritage stone walls.
The public service areas of the museum, constructed in 2004, include a modern classroom, a period tavern room, a post-and-beam Welcome Center, a research library, an exhibit gallery, the Nancy Conklin History Gallery, and a collection storage area.
In addition to managing Memento Mori, Farmington’s ancient cemetery on Main Street, and the Village Green, located at the intersection of Routes 4 and 10, the museum also oversees the Scott Swamp Cemetery on Route 6. The Stanley-Whitman House is supported in part by the Farmington Village Green and Library Association.

Our tours and lectures are unique, in that they delve into the historic, social, and political context of the 19th century and explore the role of spiritualism in the lives of reformers, suffragists, and Black activists.
WHAT IS SPIRITUALISM?
Broadly speaking, spiritualism is the belief that an individual’s awareness persists after death and can be contacted by the living. During Spirits at Stowe, we discuss the histories of multiple spiritualist traditions in U.S. history, and how these beliefs helped inspire, nourish, and connect politically radical individuals and communities from the mid-19th through the dawn of the 20th centuries—paying special attention to abolitionism, women’s rights, labor rights, and the intersections among them. We also specifically reference the Spiritualist faith, which was prevalent in the 19th and early 20th century and continues today, with various communities active.
Spirits at Stowe considers spiritualisms as a tool of resistance among radicals and reformers of the 19th century. Through contact with spirits, radical women claimed authority to speak the unspeakable, especially the right to full control and autonomy over their own bodies and families.
Claiming power to speak out and to speak freely in a deeply unjust world was also a dangerous act, particularly for Black and economically marginalized activists. The tour tells a story of 19th-century spiritualism as a tool for maneuvering through challenges. It also explores the fraught atmosphere that people had to navigate during that time. Spiritualism offered the way to imagine an “other” and better world beyond the boundaries of an unjust and dangerous real one.
Spirits at Stowe deals with themes such as violence, sexuality, and reproductive rights.
It is not recommended for children under 13.
During the tour, the Stowe House is “set” to reflect a Spiritualist setting. It takes place later in the evening and lit by (electric) candlelight. Participants on the tour observe and engage with the materials of Spiritualism including a planchette on view, Isabella’s “Spirit Book” in which she recorded the names of those who she felt she communicated with through Spiritualism, images of Spiritualist books and photography to illustrate the images and words associated with Spiritualism, and quotes about Spiritualism. Tour participants will consider the possibilities, limitations, and contradictions of Spiritualist beliefs.

Last year after a several year hiatus, we welcomed back the iconic Festival of Trees, through the dedication of an individual here at BCC, Cathy Nelson, who sadly passed away this year. Through her dedication and through the generosity of more than 30 non-profit and business partners, we had over 20 trees on display, gave away $1500 in prize money to local organizations and businesses, raffled 54 auction items, and welcomed over 300 people over the course of the three-day festival.
As last year was such a success, The Festival of Trees is returning for 2024! This year’s festival will be December 6th - December 7th. We're hoping to honor the legacy of Cathy Nelson this year and make it one of the best festivals it has ever been! Come and look at all the trees, try some of the homemade baked items, sample fresh made egg nog, see Santa, listen to live music and so much more!!!
