First, Not Last: Portraits Celebrating Individuals Who Broke Political Barriers in 2020
Prepare to be captivated by Sarah Schneiderman’s unique exhibition, “First, Not Last: Portraits Celebrating Individuals Who Broke Political Barriers in 2020”. This one-of-a-kind display will be showcased at Welles-Turner Memorial Library’s display cases from September 4 through October 31, 2024.
The exhibition is a celebration of diversity, featuring seven portraits that highlight individuals who broke political barriers during the 2020 election and the subsequent 2021 federal appointments. This moving collection showcases diverse barrier breakers from various backgrounds, including African-Americans, Asian-Americans, lesbians, Nigerian-Americans, white women, and transgender individuals, ensuring that most people can find a story that resonates with them.
Among those featured in the show is Adeoye “Oye” Owolewa, America’s first Nigerian-American US Representative. Each portrait celebrates trailblazers who have advanced the representation of disparaged groups within the traditionally white and cisgender male-dominated world of elected and appointed officials.
In a powerful artistic statement, Sarah Schneiderman creates each portrait using non-recyclable trash as her medium. This technique symbolizes society’s past marginalization of these individuals and the strength that comes from transforming such negativity into something beautiful.
“First, Not Last” is not just an exhibition, it's a call to action. It reminds viewers of the progress achieved thus far and highlights the need for further efforts toward inclusive representation in America’s government. This show is a beacon of inspiration, urging viewers to continue moving toward a more diverse reflection of our nation’s citizens.
Based in Glastonbury, CT, Sarah Schneiderman is a talented artist known for her use of non-recyclable trash and repurposed materials in her creations. All artwork featured in this exhibit is available for purchase.
The library is open Mon Tue, & Thu 9 am - 9 pm, Wed 12 pm - 9 pm, Fri & Sat 9 am - 5 pm. Check website (https://www.wtmlib.info/) for Sunday hours.
