Roll up your sleeves, get dirty and learn all about Connecticut’s colonial graveyards from Ruth Shapleigh-Brown of CT Gravestone Network.

// ABOUT GRAVESTONE CLEANING WORKSHOPS //

Ms. Shapleigh-Brown has been involved in burial ground preservation and gravestone studies since the mid 1980's which is her passion in life.

Stanley-Whitman House gravestone cleaning workshops run from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and start with an orientation on cemetery preservation, maintenance of historic gravestones, an overview of Connecticut’s historic burying grounds and cemeteries, and symbolism and carver identification. A demonstration will highlight basic care of gravestones, including low-tech conservation do’s and don’ts, before splitting into smaller groups for a demonstration of hands-on-basic techniques. Materials will be provided. Parking is available at the Barney Library which is a short distance away from the Memento Mori Cemetery.

// ABOUT STANLEY-WHITMAN HOUSE //

In 1935, Stanley-Whitman House was established as Farmington's first museum. It is a nationally recognized historic house museum and living history center that teaches through the collection, preservation, research, and dynamic interpretation of the history and culture of early Farmington, Connecticut. Programs, events, classes, and exhibits encourage visitors of all ages to immerse themselves in history by doing, acting, questioning, and engaging in colonial life and the ideas that formed the foundation of that culture.

Located in the historic village of Farmington, the museum facility centers on a circa 1720 National Historic Landmark house furnished with period antiques to reflect the everyday activities of Colonial life in Connecticut. Surrounding the house are period-raised bed gardens, an apple orchard, and heritage stone walls.

The public service areas of the museum, constructed in 2004, include a modern classroom, a period tavern room, a post-and-beam Welcome Center, a research library, an exhibit gallery, the Nancy Conklin History Gallery, and a collection storage area.

In addition to managing Memento Mori, Farmington’s ancient cemetery on Main Street, and the Village Green, located at the intersection of Routes 4 and 10, the museum also oversees the Scott Swamp Cemetery on Route 6. The Stanley-Whitman House is supported in part by the Farmington Village Green and Library Association.

The Isham-Terry House is a time capsule of genteel life in turn-of-the-century Hartford. In 1896, Dr. Oliver Isham purchased the 1854 Italianate house for his medical practice and as a home for himself, his parents and his three sisters. His sisters, Julia and Charlotte, lived in the house until their deaths in the 1970s as urban renewal claimed many of the houses in the once-grand neighborhood. Explore this beloved family home to learn about the booming industries and culture of Hartford in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, understand medical practice and public health at this time, and learn more about the Isham and Terry families through the items they owned.

Join us for Halloween Tales of New England with Dennis Picard!

Stanley-Whitman House Presents: Halloween Tales of New England

Descend into the mystique of New England's haunted past at the iconic Stanley-Whitman House. This October, we invite you to join us in the Whitman Tavern at the fireside to be enthralled by the legendary Dennis Picard, who has meticulously uncovered chilling tales from town records, ancient journals, and long-forgotten newspapers.

What to Expect:

  • Eerie narratives of witches, vampires, and uncanny occurrences.
  • Riveting tales of "murder and mayhem" from Connecticut towns: Avon, Granby, Ellington.
  • A blend of history and mystery, wrapped in the charm of authentic 18th and 19th-century storytelling.

Event Details:

  • Date: October 25, 2024
  • Time: 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm
  • Venue: Stanley-Whitman House
  • Parking is available in the museum parking lot or on the street opposite the museum

Audience: This family-friendly event is suitable for both the young and young at heart. The tales, while spine-chilling, are meant to intrigue rather than terrify.

Registration: Entry is complimentary with required registration. While attending is free, donations to support the historic Stanley-Whitman House are most welcome.

Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to experience tales from a time when the boundary between the real and the supernatural was thin. Secure your seat by the fireside and embark on a journey through time, led by the masterful narration of Dennis Picard.

Music is forbidden in Afghanistan, leaving an ancient musical tradition to live on in exile. The style of the “Afghan Radio Orchestra” consists of traditional Afghan instruments alongside Western orchestra instruments. This historic performance features an orchestra of Afghan and local musicians playing all music by Afghan composers. It will be only one of a handful of Afghan orchestral concerts around the world since Afghanistan was silenced in 2021.

10 Afghan musicians- instrumentalists, singers & composers- will converge on Hartford to join local musicians. This concert will feature music by Afghan composers, past and present, performed by an orchestra of 30.

Cuatro Puntos has a history of commitment to the orchestra music of Afghanistan since working with Afghanistan’s first and only all-female orchestra on their first-ever album recording in 2015, titled Rosegarden of Light.

You may also attend a free demonstration of Afghan instruments and music the evening before in Glastonbury - sign up here.

Ellen Evert Hopman will discuss the Celtic festival better known as "Celtic Halloween," along with her book "The Sacred Herbs of Samhain"

// THE SACRED HERBS OF SAMHAIN - PLANTS TO CONTACT THE SPIRITS OF THE DEAD //

A practical guide to using the sacred herbs of Samhain for healing, divination, purification, protection, magic, and as tools for contacting the Spirits of the Dead.

// ABOUT ELLEN EVERT HOPMAN //

Ellen Evert Hopman, is the author of a number of books and has been a teacher of Herbalism since 1983 and of Druidism since 1990. She is a professional member of the American Herbalists Guild and has presented on Druidism, herbal lore, tree lore, Paganism and magic at conferences, festivals, and events in Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and in the United States.

We are delighted to have Ellen return to Stanley-Whitman House, where she previously presented four engaging programs in 2022 on her other works: "The Real Witches of New England: History, Lore, and Modern Practice," "The Sacred Herbs of Spring: Magical, Edible, and Healing Plants to Celebrate Beltane," "Secret Medicines from Your Garden: Plants for Healing, Spirituality, and Magic," and "The Sacred Herbs of Samhain: Plants to Contact the Spirits of the Dead."

// ABOUT STANLEY-WHITMAN HOUSE //

Join us for Music in the Tavern with Mark Mandeville and Raianne Richards!

// ABOUT MARK MANDEVILLE AND RAIANNE RICHARDS //

Massachusetts-based Musicians

Little by little, you will get to know Mark Mandeville & Raianne Richards through their unmistakable vocal harmonies, poetic lyrics and down-to-earth personae. They are a married musical couple based out of Webster, Massachusetts. These prolific and hard working Massachusetts-based artists have contributed over seventeen albums within their first decade and toured consistently throughout the US and Canada.

Touches of Nature & Post-Industrial Era

Their songs poetically reflect personal experiences as factory workers, teachers, community organizers, and natives of post-industrial mill towns in central Massachusetts. The memories of days gone by and toils of history can be better remembered through songs such as “That Old Machine” or “Winds of Change.” Listeners feel refreshed lyrics with references to elements in nature.

Multiple Musical Instruments

Accompanying themselves on guitar, harmonica, ukulele, penny whistle, electric bass, and most uniquely clarinet, their live performances are both musically captivating and spiritually uplifting as audiences are carefully balanced between serious songs and humorous commentary – concert goers will leave feeling a bit more human, as if they have experienced something genuine.

Mark & Raianne are famous among regional fans for their annual Massachusetts Walking Tour which defines them as true troubadours journeying with their instruments and humble voices, from stage to stage, town to town throughout the state on foot each June.

Join us and immerse yourself in a colonial Thanksgiving's sights, sounds, and aromas. This event is perfect for history buffs, food enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to explore the rich culinary heritage of our nation.

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving like never before. Reserve your spot now and get ready for a truly unforgettable experience!

// ABOUT FOODWAYS //

Food in colonial times was much different compared to what we eat today. Religious beliefs, traditions, geography, growing season, harvest, and cooking methods all played a role in what was available and how much was eaten, with each region developing its unique dietary habits. "Living history" expert Dennis Picard will share anecdotes about New England colonial life while demonstrating how to start a fire and cook in the hearth or on an open campfire.

Join us for an online book talk about "The Sacred Herbs of Yule and Christmas" by Ellen Evert Hopman.

// ABOUT THE SACRED HERBS OF YULE AND CHRISTMAS //

Stanley-Whitman House is thrilled to welcome back esteemed author Ellen Evert Hopman for another captivating virtual book talk. This time, Ellen will present her latest work, "The Sacred Herbs of Yule and Christmas," on Monday, December 2, 2024, at 7:00 pm. This online event invites participants to immerse themselves in the heart of winter's traditions and lore.

Ellen, renowned for her deep knowledge in herbalism and enchanting storytelling, will guide attendees on an exploration of ancient Christmas and Pagan Solstice customs. This interactive session aims to uncover the history and folklore behind modern holiday observances, offering a unique glimpse into the season's most beloved practices.

Attendees will gain invaluable knowledge about the various herbs, barks, and berries essential to Christmas and Yuletide traditions, learning about their medicinal and magical properties. Ellen will also shed light on the cultural origins of familiar holiday symbols like the Christmas tree and Santa Claus and introduce lesser-known figures such as female gift bringers, holiday spirits, and Yuletide animals from various cultures.

Moreover, Ellen's narrative will include holiday crafts, such as making a Yule Log, Winter Solstice divinations, and preparing traditional festive foods and drinks like Elizabethan gingerbread cookies and Wassail. This talk is more than an informative session; it's a journey through the customs and traditions of the past.

Ellen's book, "The Sacred Herbs of Yule and Christmas," will be available for purchase, offering attendees a deeper dive into the topics discussed. You can order it directly from the author for a personal touch, including signed copies or special editions, or purchase it at the museum shop at Stanley-Whitman House, enhancing your reading experience.

This complimentary program requires online registration. Join us for this extraordinary exploration of Yuletide magic, an educational and celebratory experience of the deeper meanings and joys of the holiday season. Rediscover the sacred herbs of Yule and Christmas with Ellen Evert Hopman and infuse your holiday celebrations with ancient magic.

// ABOUT STANLEY-WHITMAN HOUSE //

// ABOUT THE PROGRAM: CHRISTMAS ON A NEW ENGLAND WHALER //

  • Date & Time: Saturday, December 14, 1:00 pm
  • Details: Talk
  • Location: Stanley-Whitman House
  • Admission: Free

Step into the past this December at Stanley-Whitman House with a captivating program titled "Christmas on a New England Whaler" Scheduled for December 14th, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, this talk promises to be an enriching experience, led by Dennis D. Picard, a living history expert with four decades of museum expertise.

During this special afternoon, attendees will have the unique opportunity to unravel the authentic and often surprising realities of early New England Christmases. Unlike the common imagery of evergreen trees, garlands, and Santa Claus, the historical actuality of Christmas in this region is both fascinating and unexpected, blending the heritage and spirit of various cultures.

Dennis Picard will share his extensive knowledge and insights in a narrative that promises to be as educational as it is engaging. The setting for this journey into the past is the historic Whitman Tavern, where Dennis will regale attendees with stories at the hearth.

The special program, which includes a 45-minute presentation followed by a 15-minute question and answer session, is not just an educational experience but also a chance to participate in a lively discussion about the historical nuances of the holiday season.

Dennis Picard's career spans significant roles at institutions like Old Sturbridge Village, Hancock Shaker Village, and Fort Number Four, among others. His background in sociology and museum experience has equipped him with a deep understanding of the lifestyles and folkways of New England, making him an ideal guide for this historical exploration.

The event is free, but donations are greatly appreciated and will be used to support the ongoing programs at Stanley-Whitman House. It's an excellent opportunity for community members and history enthusiasts to come together and delve into the rich tapestry of New England's past while supporting the preservation and educational endeavors of Stanley-Whitman House.

Join us for an afternoon that promises to be as enlightening as it is enjoyable as we discover together the real history of Christmas in New England.

// ABOUT WALTER SALAS-HUMARA //

A Cuban-American whose parents fled Castro’s Havana with him still in the womb, Walter Salas-Humara was raised bilingual across the Florida Straits in Fort Lauderdale. College at the University of Florida in Gainesville and a residency with the Vulgar Boatmen left him with a lifelong habit of Mudcrutch/Tom Petty-style crunchy guitar riffs. Chasing the punk prairie fire to New York just in time to sift through the ashes, he formed The Silos in 1985 with guitarist Bob Rupe and violinist Mary Rowell, plugging the main cable of American rock idiom into the jerry-rigged soundboard of Velvets-era feral experimentalism. The unlikely result, as evidenced by About Her Steps (1986), seminal Cuba (1987), and their RCA debut The Silos (i.e., The One with the Bird on the Cover, 1990), was a loose-limbed conceptual country-rock that, in turn influenced (if not outright inspired) the alt-country No Depression movement just around the corner. The band was voted Best New American Band in Rolling Stone Magazine's Critics' Poll of 1987 and appeared on Late Night with David Letterman in 1990.

// ABOUT THE MUSIC IN THE TAVERN SERIES //

Stanley-Whitman House's Music in the Tavern Series presents artists and shows differently than a club show- instead, our house concert is more up close and personal. All of the artifice is stripped away. There is no stage, no dressing rooms, and no barrier between the performer and the audience. The SWH Music in the Tavern series is more like being one step closer to how music was intended- an artist traveling from town to town, telling stories, and making friends. Come check this out!

Music and art is forbidden in Afghanistan, leaving ancient traditions to live on in hiding or exile. The program will open with the mesmerizing sound of centuries-old Afghan raga music, performed on traditional instruments. Following will be the premiere of a ballet written by Sadie Harrison and choreographed by Elisa Scroth, based on artworks by Afghan women smuggled out of the country and on display this evening. The ballet will be performed by Ekklesia Contemporary Ballet and Cuatro Puntos Ensemble, and the artworks are made possible through the courageous work of Northern Ireland’s Beyond Skin.
