Prepare to be captivated by Sarah Schneiderman’s unique exhibition, “First, Not Last: Portraits Celebrating Individuals Who Broke Political Barriers in 2020”. This one-of-a-kind display will be showcased at Welles-Turner Memorial Library’s display cases from September 4 through October 31, 2024

The exhibition is a celebration of diversity, featuring seven portraits that highlight individuals who broke political barriers during the 2020 election and the subsequent 2021 federal appointments. This moving collection showcases diverse barrier breakers from various backgrounds, including African-Americans, Asian-Americans, lesbians, Nigerian-Americans, white women, and transgender individuals, ensuring that most people can find a story that resonates with them.

Among those featured in the show is Adeoye “Oye” Owolewa, America’s first Nigerian-American US Representative. Each portrait celebrates trailblazers who have advanced the representation of disparaged groups within the traditionally white and cisgender male-dominated world of elected and appointed officials.

In a powerful artistic statement, Sarah Schneiderman creates each portrait using non-recyclable trash as her medium. This technique symbolizes society’s past marginalization of these individuals and the strength that comes from transforming such negativity into something beautiful.

“First, Not Last” is not just an exhibition, it's a call to action. It reminds viewers of the progress achieved thus far and highlights the need for further efforts toward inclusive representation in America’s government. This show is a beacon of inspiration, urging viewers to continue moving toward a more diverse reflection of our nation’s citizens.

Based in Glastonbury, CT, Sarah Schneiderman is a talented artist known for her use of non-recyclable trash and repurposed materials in her creations. All artwork featured in this exhibit is available for purchase.

The library is open Mon Tue, & Thu 9 am - 9 pm, Wed 12 pm - 9 pm, Fri & Sat 9 am - 5 pm. Check website (https://www.wtmlib.info/) for Sunday hours.

Exhibition curated by Laura Engel, Professor, Duquesne University

Pearls figure prominently in pictures of celebrated and imagined figures across the eighteenth century. Adorning royalty, celebrities, servants, and in fashion plates, the mysterious, opaque, and gleaming white accessory aligns with the mutable, seductive, and threatening emergence of new forms of identity. Worn as jewelry, as embellishments to the body and dress, or embedded in the settings of precious objects – pearls accessorize, highlight, colonize, and perform. As one of the most sought-after commodities of the early modern colonial enterprise, a precious jewel tied to bondage and violence, pearls have a baroque and complex history. Drawing from materials in the Lewis Walpole Library this exhibition will explore the “paradox of pearls” by considering how the varied and often contradictory meanings of this jewel appear in period images and the ways in which practices from the past connect us to the powerful presence of pearls today.

Gallery on the Green presents its 56th Annual Open Juried Exhibition. This highly anticipated competition draws artists from all over Connecticut and beyond as they compete for multiple prizes. On display is fine art in a wide variety of styles, media and subject matter including painting, prints, drawing, photography, ceramics and sculpture. Prizes are expected to total over $1,500

This year’s juror, Francis Estrada, is a visual artist and educator. He was born in the Philippines and is currently residing in Connecticut. Estrada has a fine arts degree in painting and drawing from San Jose State University, and has taught in a variety of studio, classroom, and museum settings to diverse audiences, including programs for adults with disabilities, cultural institutions, and after-school programs. As a museum educator, he enjoys teaching about the amalgamation of art and culture through objects. His artwork focuses on culture, history, and perception.

Estrada is currently the Senior Manager of Community Engagement and Family programs at the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain. From 2017-2023 he served as Associate Educator at the School and Teacher Programs for MoMA in NYC.

Also on display is “Mythical Tilt,” a solo show of paintings by Karl Lund. Lund’s art involves a passion for science fiction and fantasy imagery with a more modern ‘street art’ twist. Many compositions are based on older existing pinball playfield configurations and populated with patterns and imagery from myths of various cultures. In some instances, he has altered the typically male dominant hero roles to female characters in an effort to change stale and outdated archetypes. Hiding in some paintings are modern iconography and classic science fiction imagery. Lund encourages viewers “to open their minds and question past perceptions of myths and themes.”

Join us for Halloween Tales of New England with Dennis Picard!

Stanley-Whitman House Presents: Halloween Tales of New England

Descend into the mystique of New England's haunted past at the iconic Stanley-Whitman House. This October, we invite you to join us in the Whitman Tavern at the fireside to be enthralled by the legendary Dennis Picard, who has meticulously uncovered chilling tales from town records, ancient journals, and long-forgotten newspapers.

What to Expect:

  • Eerie narratives of witches, vampires, and uncanny occurrences.
  • Riveting tales of "murder and mayhem" from Connecticut towns: Avon, Granby, Ellington.
  • A blend of history and mystery, wrapped in the charm of authentic 18th and 19th-century storytelling.

Event Details:

  • Date: October 25, 2024
  • Time: 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm
  • Venue: Stanley-Whitman House
  • Parking is available in the museum parking lot or on the street opposite the museum

Audience: This family-friendly event is suitable for both the young and young at heart. The tales, while spine-chilling, are meant to intrigue rather than terrify.

Registration: Entry is complimentary with required registration. While attending is free, donations to support the historic Stanley-Whitman House are most welcome.

Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to experience tales from a time when the boundary between the real and the supernatural was thin. Secure your seat by the fireside and embark on a journey through time, led by the masterful narration of Dennis Picard.

// ABOUT STANLEY-WHITMAN HOUSE //

In 1935, Stanley-Whitman House was established as Farmington's first museum. It is a nationally recognized historic house museum and living history center that teaches through the collection, preservation, research, and dynamic interpretation of the history and culture of early Farmington, Connecticut. Programs, events, classes, and exhibits encourage visitors of all ages to immerse themselves in history by doing, acting, questioning, and engaging in colonial life and the ideas that formed the foundation of that culture.

Located in the historic village of Farmington, the museum facility centers on a circa 1720 National Historic Landmark house furnished with period antiques to reflect the everyday activities of Colonial life in Connecticut. Surrounding the house are period-raised bed gardens, an apple orchard, and heritage stone walls.

The public service areas of the museum, constructed in 2004, include a modern classroom, a period tavern room, a post-and-beam Welcome Center, a research library, an exhibit gallery, the Nancy Conklin History Gallery, and a collection storage area.

In addition to managing Memento Mori, Farmington’s ancient cemetery on Main Street, and the Village Green, located at the intersection of Routes 4 and 10, the museum also oversees the Scott Swamp Cemetery on Route 6. The Stanley-Whitman House is supported in part by the Farmington Village Green and Library Association.

// SUPPORT STANLEY-WHITMAN HOUSE //

At Stanley Whitman House, our commitment to accessibility is paramount. While not all of our programs are free, we strive to offer as many as possible at no cost, thanks to the generous support of our underwriters. If you wish to assist us in this mission, we welcome donations, which help us to expand further and diversify our range of activities. Your contributions play a crucial role in maintaining and increasing the accessibility of our programs.

Save the Date!! Our Prison Arts Program Annual Show 2024 Opening Reception is September 26th from 6 – 8PM at CT State Community College Manchester. The show is free and open to all and runs through Nov. 13.

This is the 44th Annual Show of artwork from Connecticut’s prisons. The Annual Show is open to anyone incarcerated, or formerly incarcerated, in Connecticut. The Annual Show is a diverse, inclusive exhibition, featuring new artwork from accomplished artists working in Prison Arts’ collectives and workshops, as well as from artists exhibiting for the first time, and everyone in between. The show features drawings, paintings, sculptures, and carpentry projects. Beyond traditional arts supplies, many artworks are made using unique materials, including soap, woven paper bags, and food packaging. The Annual Show is a chance to dignify the constructive endeavors undertaken daily in prison, provide families a chance to connect with their loved ones, and create connections between the prison and the outside community. Don’t miss this powerful community event!

Since 1978, the Prison Arts Program has been working to transform Connecticut’s prisons, and the lives of all those living and working inside those prisons, through the arts.

Community Partners in Action has been assisting those affected by the criminal justice system, while advocating and enabling systemic change (institutionally, judicially, and legislatively), since 1875. CPA is nearing their 150th anniversary!

Come join us and listen closely to the stories of Farmington residents, long gone but not forgotten!

// ABOUT GHOST WALK //

There's a slight stir in the air causing the fallen leaves to rustle as you walk through Memento Mori... Did you just catch a glimpse of movement from the corner of your eye?

Come join us and listen closely to the stories of Farmington residents, long gone but not forgotten, as told by Stanley-Whitman House living history interpreters. You will hear the frightfully true stories of those who have come before us.

Recommended for anyone age 12 or older. In case of rain, the event will be held at the Stanley-Whitman House.

Saturday, October 26, 2024.

Three tours offered: 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm, and 3:00 pm. Reservations are required.

Members $20, Non-members $25.

// ABOUT STANLEY-WHITMAN HOUSE //

Come enjoy an evening of dance at the CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half Day Program’s Choreographers’ Showcase! On Saturday, October 26, 2025 our students will perform the work of professional choreographers based in New York, Tennessee and Connecticut in this year’s Choreographers’ Showcase.

Choreographers’ Showcase is a rare opportunity for high school dancers to learn and perform with critically acclaimed choreographers. The performance brings world-renowned choreographers, and their original works, to the Learning Corridor's Theater of the Performing Arts in Hartford.

This year, the Academy welcomes the following featured artists:

·        An excerpt from Psalm by legendary choreographer José Limón, as staged by Nina Watt

·        Urban Bush Women’s Walking with ‘Trane, excerpt from "The Quartet"  choreographed by  Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and Mame Diarra Speis, restaged by Tendayi Kuumba

·        Presidential Tango by Laura Glenn staged by Dance Chair, Alexa Melonopoulos Fleury

·        An original work by alumnus Rickey Flagg ’09, now of the Collage Dance Collective (Memphis)

·        Alone Together choreographed by faculty member Thomas Giroir

The CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half Day Program is thrilled to present the following work in this year’s program.

·        The Academy is delighted to continue our relationship with the José Limón Dance Foundation, Inc. José Limón is credited with creating one of the world’s most important and enduring dance legacies, and we are honored to present Limón’s Suite from Psalm. Staged by former company member and Hartt Dance Division faculty member Nina Watt, Psalm was first performed August 19, 1967 at the Connecticut College American Dance Festival by the José Limón Dance Company.

·        We are pleased to welcome Urban Bush Women (UBW) back to the Academy. UBW is a groundbreaking Black women-led theatrical dance company and social activism ensemble. Walking with 'Trane, choreographed by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and Mame Diarra Speis, and restaged by Tendayi Kuumba is inspired by the life of John Coltrane and his seminal jazz suite A Love Supreme.

 ·        Our students will also be presenting Presidential Tango by Laura Glenn, staged by dance chair Alexa Melonopoulos Fleury. Laura was a longtime faculty member at the Julliard School and director of Hartford’s own Works/Laura Glenn Dance. Presidential Tango proves to be a witty, fast-paced dance piece set to a soundtrack of cleverly manipulated snippets from President Reagan's speeches.

·        Alumnus Rickey Flagg, Class of 2009, came home to create an original work on our dancers. Rickey currently dances professionally with Collage Dance Collective, a Memphis-based ballet company and conservatory on a mission to inspire growth and diversity of ballet.

·        Faculty member Thomas Giroir rounds off our program with a contemporary ballet piece inspired by his students.

The evening will begin with a pre-performance reception honoring Kim Stroud and her longtime and outstanding commitment to the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half Day Program in her roles as Dance Department Chair, Assistant Director of the Arts, Director of the Arts and Director/Principal. In honor of her service, we are establishing a scholarship in her name.

Reserved seat tickets for adults are $15 and $5 for students and seniors. Group rates are available. Tickets can be purchased online, by phone, or in person.

•         Online at http://www.crec.org/theater (additional charges apply)

•         Reception and scholarship donations can be made here Reception and Scholarship Donations

•         By phone at 860-757-6388, with Visa, MasterCard, or Discover between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday

His 30 albums have garnered every imaginable honor including seven Grammy nominations. McCutcheon’s apprenticeship to many of the legendary figures of Appalachian music imbedded a love of not only home-made music, but a sense of community and rootedness. 2:40-4ish PM: Wisdom of Our Ancestors

In this workshop we will discuss Native American philosophies and how we can Co-Create and Live in the World we want our children and grandchildren to inherit:

One needs to only tune to the various news outlets or social media platforms to see all the issues that divide us. We will therefore explore the collective Wisdom of Our Ancestors

to discover what brings us together.

An example is the Lakota phrase “Mitakuye Oyasin” roughly translated to “All My Relations” or “To All Things I am Related through the One.”

A study of Buddhist, Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Taoist and Native American beliefs, a common theme runs through them all is that we are not only connected to

each other but to all of creation. Our hope for a brighter, more sustainable future economically, politically, environmentally and most especially spiritually depends on all of us seeking the good counsel of our Indigenous Ancestors’ collective wisdom and honoring the teaching with gratitude and humility.

We must remember that no matter where on the planet our Ancestors came from, north, south, west or east and no matter what race, black, white, yellow or red,

we are all indigenous to Mother Earth.

We are all in this together and are responsible to Co-Create the World we want our children and grandchildren to inherit.

Music is forbidden in Afghanistan, leaving an ancient musical tradition to live on in exile. The style of the “Afghan Radio Orchestra” consists of traditional Afghan instruments alongside Western orchestra instruments. This historic performance features an orchestra of Afghan and local musicians playing all music by Afghan composers. It will be only one of a handful of Afghan orchestral concerts around the world since Afghanistan was silenced in 2021.

10 Afghan musicians- instrumentalists, singers & composers- will converge on Hartford to join local musicians. This concert will feature music by Afghan composers, past and present, performed by an orchestra of 30.

Cuatro Puntos has a history of commitment to the orchestra music of Afghanistan since working with Afghanistan’s first and only all-female orchestra on their first-ever album recording in 2015, titled Rosegarden of Light.

You may also attend a free demonstration of Afghan instruments and music the evening before in Glastonbury - sign up here.

// ABOUT ELLEN EVERT HOPMAN //

Ellen Evert Hopman, is the author of a number of books and has been a teacher of Herbalism since 1983 and of Druidism since 1990. She is a professional member of the American Herbalists Guild and has presented on Druidism, herbal lore, tree lore, Paganism and magic at conferences, festivals, and events in Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and in the United States.

We are delighted to have Ellen return to Stanley-Whitman House, where she previously presented four engaging programs in 2022 on her other works: "The Real Witches of New England: History, Lore, and Modern Practice," "The Sacred Herbs of Spring: Magical, Edible, and Healing Plants to Celebrate Beltane," "Secret Medicines from Your Garden: Plants for Healing, Spirituality, and Magic," and "The Sacred Herbs of Samhain: Plants to Contact the Spirits of the Dead."

// ABOUT STANLEY-WHITMAN HOUSE //

“Thinning of the Veil: reconnecting with the lost” is a moving concert that incorporates dance with the beautiful sound of choral singing. During this time of the year, many cultures believe the veil between the living and the dead is thin (commemorations such as Halloween, Samhain, Dia de los Muertos, and All Souls Day). Since the loss of a loved one is a universal experience, we crafted a concert that explores stories and harmonies that allow space to process loss, feel comfort, and find connection. The performance will feature performances by Voices of Concinnity, Connecticut’s versatile vocal chamber ensemble based in Mansfield, and special guest Ekklesia Contemporary Ballet and include choral works by William Byrd, Caroline Shaw, Florence Price, Eric Whitacre, Ethel Smyth, the Beatles, and more. On a night where the veil between the living and the afterlife is thin, may the voices of Concinnity and the movement of dance reconnect us with ones we have lost.

Concert is Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 7:00pm at United Congregational Church in Tolland. Tickets are $20/students free.
