Exhibition "Is It Any Good? Prints, Drawings, and Paintings at the Lewis Walpole Library"
Curated by Cynthia E. Roman, Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Paintings, the Lewis Walpole Library
Art historians, curators, and connoisseurs often pose the question, Is it any good? evoking a sense of quality manifest in canonical works of art. By contrast, when building a collection of eighteenth-century prints that would become a cornerstone for research at the Lewis Walpole Library, W.S. and Annie Burr Lewis envisioned a visual collection that is essentially archival. Prints were valued foremost as documents that would improve their library dedicated to the life and times of Horace Walpole and to 18th-century studies. The Lewises’ iconographic approach, however, does not preclude the importance of assessing what is good. Aesthetic, material, and technical attributes are integral to understanding the power of visual art and artifacts to communicate the eighteenth-century histories they document. Asking Is it any good? this exhibition presents a selection of prints, drawings, and paintings at the Lewis Walpole Library to explore the intersections of quality and documentary value.
On view September 22, 2023 through June 28, 2024

Ellen Evert Hopman will discuss the Celtic festival of Beltaine, along with her book, the Sacred Herbs of Spring.
// ABOUT THE SACRED HERBS OF SPRING //
This book is available at the Stanley-Whitman House museum store and on Ellen Evert Hopman's website.
A practical guide to the celebration of Beltaine and the sacred herbs of spring
• Explores the identification, harvest, and safe practical and ritual use of more than 90 plants and trees
• Details rituals for honoring the traditional Gods and Goddesses of spring, such as the Goddess Chloris, the Goddess Flora, and the Daghda
• Reveals which herbs to use for luck, magic, protection, purification, abundance, fertility, and love as well as the herbs of the Faeries and Elves and herbs for journeying to the Otherworld and for contacting the High Gods and Goddesses
The festival of Beltaine, May Day, is a celebration of the return of spring and the promise of summer, a time for love magic and spells for increasing the fertility of the land and the plants that grow upon it. Like Samhain in autumn, Beltaine is also a time when the veil between the physical and spiritual world is at its most transparent and the ancestors and denizens of the Otherworld easily interact with the world of humans.
Presenting a practical guide to the celebration of Beltaine, Ellen Evert Hopman examines the plants, customs, foods, drinks, and rituals of May Day across many cultures. Discussing the gods and goddesses of spring, Hopman details the rituals for honoring them as well as traditional poems, prayers, incantations, folk rhymes, and sayings related to this time of year. She explores well dressing, the custom of honoring the source of sacred water by decorating a well. She also looks at Beltaine’s association with Walpurgisnacht and Hexennacht, which fall the preceding evening.
In the extensive section on the sacred plants of Beltaine, the author explores more than 90 herbs and trees, offering spells, rituals, and recipes alongside their medicinal healing uses. She reveals sacred woods suitable for the Beltaine fires and Beltaine flowers for rituals and spells. She explores herbs for luck, magic, purification, abundance, and love; herbs for protection, such as bindweed, elder, and St. John’s wort; herbs of the Faeries and Elves, such as burdock and dandelion; and herbs for journeying to the Otherworld and contacting the high gods and goddesses. She also details the identification, harvest, and preparation of seasonal edible herbs, greens, mushrooms, and flowers.
Woven throughout with mystical tales of folk, Faery, and sacred herbs, this guide offers each of us practical and magical ways to connect with Nature, the plant kingdom, and the Spirits that surround us in the season of spring.

His first numbered symphony, Prokofiev chose to compose his Classical Symphony without the aid of the piano and each movement is brief and to the point in the true “Classical” style. Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro includes some of the most famous and hummable tunes in classical music and created a revival in the city of Prague for the composer. It was there, in Prague, that his dramatic Symphony No. 38 was premiered, and it was considered a gift to the city.

Night Shift: The Greatest Hits of Three Iconic Decades
Under the direction of Hartford Symphony Orchestra Assistant Conductor, Adam Kerry Boyles, we welcome pianist and UConn professor, Angelina Gadeliya, performing fellow UConn Professor and Grammy® Award winner, Kenneth Fuchs’s Piano Concerto, “Spiritualist”-a piece inspired by three paintings of Helen Frankenthaler.

AN EVENING — A LIFETIME IN THE MAKING
Ever wonder what might happen if you stop waiting for permission and start believing in yourself? Just ask Barbra Streisand.
At 21, Babs spent her evenings singing in hot cabaret clubs dressed up in funky thrift store finds. At 21, acclaimed performer Jenna Pastuszek spent her evenings serving mini hot dogs at bar mitzvahs sporting a patterned bow tie. Until she met Barbra, and everything changed. Learn how Barbra’s self-confidence, power, and unique panache inspired a young performer to get out of her own way and embrace her own kooky self, weird last name and all.
Featuring Barbra's early hits like "Happy Days Are Here Again," "Miss Marmelstein," "Bewitched," "Don't Rain on My Parade" and more. Come hear the songs that made Barbra, Barbra.
Me, Myself, and Barbra has been seen at 11 major regional theatres, performing arts centers, and community centers in 6 different states since it's 2022 debut!

Join us for an Art Exhibition Talk and Reception with the Artist, Julia Einstein.
// ABOUT THE ARTIST: JULIA EINSTEIN //
Julia Einstein makes paintings as if walking into a garden room with an artist’s eye on nature in vivid compositions, elegant arrangements, and painterly surfaces. Her work is about creating a connection for interpreting -- between maker and viewer. The artist’s recent work is a delve into flora and history, the ideas of the women who were botanical pioneers inspired by the natural world, early needleworkers motivated by cherished symbols, and creators of gardens influenced by a love of community. She is currently the Artist in Residence at Raleigh City Farm where she makes her home in Raleigh, North Carolina.
A recent collaborative project shares a year in the process of creating an exhibition with @maineflorathreeviews. The artist has created "Herbarium" at the Stanley - Whitman House in Farmington, Connecticut, was included in "Perspectives: Art & History" at the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk, Maine, and produced "The Peony Project / Paintings" for Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay, Maine. Her “Modern Botanicals” series is informed by the 19th century trailblazers who furthered the field of botany with their art, and inspired her to create an herbarium, make paint appear like the quilts, and embroidered silk, and use a palette of saturated color to create unusual color schemes. The thrill of working from the tiny to the oversized results in “Flower Power.” She continues to paint “Flower Portraits” of bouquets gathered from her artist's garden. She is represented by Portland Art Gallery in Portland, Maine.
